External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently revealed a personal connection to the 1984 hijacking incident, sharing that his father was aboard the hijacked flight. Speaking at a community event in Geneva, Jaishankar highlighted his unique perspective during such situations, having experienced both the family side and the government’s handling of crises.
The revelation came in response to a question about the Netflix series IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack, which portrays the infamous 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight. Jaishankar, who was part of the team managing the 1984 hijacking, explained how he had to juggle his professional responsibilities and personal concerns.
Recalling the moment, Jaishankar mentioned that he had informed his mother about his inability to return home due to the hijacking. It was then that he learned his father was on the hijacked flight, which eventually landed safely in Dubai. Thankfully, no lives were lost during the incident, but it could have escalated into a much more dangerous situation
