Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history today as he visited the renowned Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei during his two-day trip aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between India and Brunei. The mosque, named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei and considered an architectural marvel, stands as a symbol of modern Brunei.
PM Modi’s visit to the mosque followed the inauguration of a new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Brunei’s Jalan Duta Diplomatic Enclave, near the US Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan. The new facility, showcasing traditional Indian motifs and lush greenery, was inaugurated with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in attendance. The Prime Minister lit a ceremonial lamp and unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion.
The Indian community in Brunei greeted PM Modi with a warm reception as he interacted with local officials, scholars, and members of the diaspora. His visit marks the first bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei, at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
The Prime Minister’s Office described the chancery complex as a blend of classic and contemporary design, reflecting India’s cultural heritage while creating an inviting atmosphere with its aesthetic appeal.
