A cinematic revolution unfolds for Indian cinema, as the 74th Berlin International Film Festival announces that ‘The Fable’ will make its global debut in the prestigious Encounters Competition. This groundbreaking distinction places the film as only the second Indian production in the last 30 years to enter one of Berlinale’s prominent competitive segments. The festival’s recognition is further amplified by granting the film an evening premiere on the opening day, a slot typically reserved for highly anticipated works.
Manoj Bajpayee expressed, “Being part of ‘The Fable’ has been an extraordinary journey. Collaborating with the creative genius Raam Reddy and engaging in my first experience with an A-list festival supported by an international production house has been truly inspiring. The film’s presence at Berlinale symbolizes the global outreach and artistic prowess of Indian storytelling.”
The movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Padma Shri and multi-national Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee, along with Deepak Dobriyal, Priyanka Bose, and Tillotama Shome. Additionally, it introduces debutant Hiral Sidhu and child actor Awan Pookot to the audience.
Raam Reddy, the visionary writer and director of the film, expressed, “The Fable is not merely a movie; it’s an unfiltered expression of my soul. I consider myself fortunate for various reasons: the collaboration with the brilliance of Manoj ji and such an exceptional cast, the premiere in a competitive section of Berlinale, and the global support for the film. However, most importantly, I am grateful for the opportunity to narrate this story exactly as I envisioned it.” The film is supported by seasoned producer Sunmin Park, known for producing the global Hollywood hit ‘The Others,’ featuring Nicole Kidman, as well as numerous other noteworthy international successes.
The most recent Indian film featured in the Encounters Competition was ‘The Shepherdess and The Seven Songs in 2020. As for the Main Competition, no Indian film has graced the stage since Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s ‘Shelter of the Wings’ in 1994.
